'Outrageous' driver gets jail time

By Tony Blais

An “outrageous” Edmonton bad driver, who has continued to get behind the wheel despite not having a valid driver’s licence since 1988, was handed jail time Friday.

Barry James Hickmore, a 54-year father of two, was sentenced to four months behind bars after pleading guilty in Provincial Court to driving while disqualified.

Hickmore was also slapped with a three-year driving ban – which won’t kick in until after his current licence suspension expires in 2013 – by Judge Robert Philp, who noted the city man has a “horrible driving record.”

Philp also told Hickmore he will continue to get higher and higher sentences if he doesn’t stop driving illegally.

Court heard that since Hickmore had his driver’s licence taken away as a result of a 1988 impaired driving conviction, he has racked up an additional drunk-driving conviction, a dangerous driving conviction and nine convictions for driving while disqualified.

“This is quite outrageous, in my opinion, regarding his pattern of driving,” said Crown prosecutor Susanne Thompson. “He seems to not be getting the message that he cannot be driving without a licence.”

Court heard Hickmore’s latest charge stemmed from July 19 when the windshield installer was busted for being illegally behind the wheel. After initially hiding from police, Hickmore owned up to not having a licence.

Hickmore was given credit for the 88 days he has already served in pre-trialcustody, leaving him with 32 days to go.

Philp also agreed to let Hickmore serve the balance of his sentence on weekends at the Edmonton Remand Centre.
