More Than 600 Ponoka Students
Honor Retiring School Caretaker

PONOKA — T. W. Hickmore, who for more than 31 years was caretaker of Ponoka schools, was honored by approximately 600 students recently on his retirement.

The old Ponoka Elementary School was filled to capacity with students from 19 classrooms from grades I to IV crowding both floors to honor their janitor.

As Mr. and Mrs. Hickmore entered the school the students broke into song honoring the veteran caretaker.

Tommy Webber, whose father once attended the school, presented Mr. Hickmore with a piggy bank filled with coins.

WIFE HONORED

Mrs. Hickmore was presented with a bouquet of roses by David Richmond, whose father also attended the school which was under Mr. Hickmore's care.

Mr. Hickmore was hired by the school board in 1930, shortly after the $65,000 brick school opened. His knowledge of steam heating and strict adherence to duty was a particular asset in his career.

In early days the coal-heated boiler was hand-fired. Many times Mr. Hickmore would stay at the school all night to keep the furnace stoked.

Mr. and Mrs. Hickmore were honored further when the school staff and county school committee presented them with gifts.
