LIONEL FREDERICK HICKMORE

1895 to 1952

The death of Mr. Hickmore, in his fifty-seventh year, came as a shock to a wide circle of friends and acquaintances, especially in the St. Laurent area where he had lived for the past twenty years. A native of Westmount, he had lived in Notre Dame de Grace for a number of years before moving to St. Laurent.

Educated at King’s School and the old Westmount Academy, he was prominent in athletics in his younger years, especially in baseball. As a schoolboy, he attracted the attention of baseball men and spent one summer pitching in the Michigan-Ontario professional league. The first great war not only interrupted his business career but put an end to his baseball ambitions. On his return, after four years overseas with the 5th C.M.R’s., he pitched one or two games for Frank Thompson’s Montreal West club in the City and District League, but his playing aggravated an injury received overseas and eventually compelled him to quit the game.

A C.P.R. man, and the son of a C.P.R. man, railroading was both his work and his hobby. He entered the employ of the railroad before the first world war, as an apprentice in the signals department, and at the time of his death was maintainer in charge of the Buckingham and Laurentian divisions.

Mr. Hickmore was active in several spheres outside his railroad work. He was a former chairman of the Board of Protestant School Commissioners, St. Laurent, a member of St. Andrew’s United Church, a life member of St. Andrew’s Lodge, No. 53, R.R.Q., and of Maple Chapter, 116, Royal Arch Masons, Carleton Place, Ontario.

Mr. Hickmore had a host of friends who will keenly feel the loss of a kindly and generous personality. The large number at his funeral was a testimony of the esteem in which he was held – an esteem eloquently put into words by Rev. J. A. Hockin.

We extend the deepest sympathy to his widow, the former Millicent Ferguson, and to his daughters Dorothy, Millicent, and June (Mrs. Arthur Orford).
